LESSON 7: HOLY SPIRIT (Part 3): THE FILLING OF THE HOLY SPIRIT

Memorize: Ephesians 5:18: "And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit."

I. WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE FILLED WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT?

Remember that the Holy Spirit is a Divine Person, the Third Person of the Triune God, not just an influence or a power like electricity. He is in every Christian (I Corinthians 6:19). Being filled with the Spirit means control—100% control of all areas of the Christian's life by the Holy Spirit. A drunken person is controlled by the liquor that he has consumed. Because of this he thinks and acts in ways normally unnatural to him. Likewise, the person who is Spirit-filled is controlled by the Holy Spirit, and he too acts in ways that are unnatural to his old sinful way of life.

According to Ephesians 5:18, are Christians expected to be filled with the Spirit?

Yes or No ?________

II. HOW WE CAN BE FILLED WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT?

There are certain things to do if we want to continue being filled with the Holy Spirit: (1) Grieve not; (2) Quench not; (3) Walk in the Spirit.

A.    We must not "grieve" the Holy Spirit

1. Write out Ephesians 4:30

2. The Holy Spirit is grieved by sin in the believer's life. What are some of the sins that grieve the Holy Spirit mentioned in Ephesians 4:31,32; Eph. 5:3,4?

3. What is the Divine remedy for effects of sin in a Christian's life? (I John 1:9). The remedy for a grieved Holy Spirit is summed up in the simple word _____________ (homologeo)

4. How does God correct unconfessed sin in the lives of His children
(Read Hebrews 12: 5-11).

5. What is the Divine cure for the problem of sin in the life of an unsaved person? (John 3:16). Simply _____________.

"It is because the redemption-price has already been paid in the precious blood of Christ that God can save sinners who only believe and restore saints who only confess." Lewis Sperry Chafer

B.    We must not "quench" the Holy Spirit

1. Write out I Thessalonians 5:19 (The word "quench" found in KJV)

Quenching the Spirit is simply being unyielded to Him, or saying "no" to Him. The Holy Spirit is "quenched" by any unyieldedness to the revealed will of God. If I deliberately do things that He tells me not to do, I am quenching the Holy Spirit and not allowing Him to control me.

2. What is the key word in Romans 6:13 which describes the believer's responsibility to God? "Yieldedness to the will of God is not demonstrated by one particular issue; it is rather a matter of having taken the will of God as the rule of one’s life." L.S. Chafer

"Yieldedness to the Spirit includes submission to the plain teachings of the Word of God, obedience to the guidance of the Spirit and acceptance in faith of the providential acts of God." John F. Walvoord (The Holy Spirit, 199)

3. In Romans 12:1-2, what should we do because we are saved?

C.    We must "walk in the Spirit"

The first two things we mentioned represent things the believer must not do. He must not grieve the Spirit by leaving unconfessed any known sin. He must not quench the Spirit by saying "no" to God.

The third condition is something the believer must do. He must "walk in the Spirit." Definition: To walk in the Spirit means to live in daily dependence upon the presence and power of the Holy Spirit.

1. Write out Galatians 5:16

2. A life of dependence upon the Holy Spirit is necessary because our enemies are strong. One of our enemies is the Devil. What does the Devil want to do to you according to I Peter 5:8?

3. What is another enemy the Christian has according to Galatians 5:17?

The term "flesh" refers to the old sin nature that is still present in the believer so that the believer can still be tempted and still sin.

4. What are some of the desires of the flesh in Galatians 5:19-21?

5. What is a third enemy a Christian has in James 4:4?

III. THE RESULTS OF BEING FILLED WITH THE SPIRIT

A. A Christ-like Character (Galatians 5:22-23)

Write out Galatians 5:22-23

It has often been pointed out that this fruit produced by being filled by the Spirit is a perfect picture of Christ-likeness.

B. Worship and Praise (Ephesians 5:18-20)

List three consequences in these verses of being filled with the Spirit:

1.

2.

3.

C. Submissiveness (Ephesians 5:21)

A result of being Spirit filled will show up in our relationships in the home. There will be harmony between husbands and wives, parents and children, employers and employees. Control by self will disrupt the harmony that ought to exist in all relationships of life.

What will be the results of being Spirit-filled in each of these verses?

1. Ephesians 5:22

2. Ephesians 5:25,28

3. Ephesians 6:1-3

4. Ephesians 6:4

5. Ephesians 6:5-8

6. Ephesians 6:9

D. Service (John 7:37-39)

When Christ is received, not only is our own soul's thirst satisfied but the blessing received becomes the blessing distributed. The believer not only satisfies himself but he overflows in service to others.
