"Are We Idolaters?"
THE SECOND COMMANDMENT
Exodus 20:4-6
Dr. Rick Bartosik
Mililani Community Church
March 23, 2003

You shall not make for yourself an idol in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below. You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God…."

WHAT DOES THIS COMMANDMENT REQUIRE OF ME?

In the Second Commandment God forbids the creation of anything that is supposed to be a representation of Him to assist us in worship.

Three reasons why we are not to use objects in worship:

It distorts our __________________ of God

It distorts our __________________ to God

It distorts our __________________ of God

HOW DOES THIS COMMANDMENT APPLY TO ME?

We may not bow down to idols but if we have wrong mental images of God (concepts of God that are wrong) that too can be idolatry.

WHY SHOULD I KEEP THIS COMMANDMENT?

A faulty view of God can have tragic results in your life

HOW CAN I KEEP THIS COMMANDMENT?

The only way you can know whether your thoughts of God are worthy of Him is by constantly renewing your mind with the truths about God found in His Word. This is why we are committed at Mililani Community Church on having as our primary emphasis–the preaching and teaching of God’s Word in its totality. Only in the preaching and teaching of Scripture are we able to see God in all His splendor. I am convinced that most of the problems Christians have are directly related to a faulty view of God and they don’t even know it. We need good comprehensive Bible teaching throughout our Christian life so that we can appreciate who our God really is and become all that the true God wants us to be.
